San Francisco - A Coast Guard rescue operation on February
24th underscores the importance of safety equipment. The
rescue of two crewmembers from the sunken fishing vessel
Della C off Point Ano Nuevo, California was largely attributed to
two critical pieces of safety equipment. The Emergency Position
Indicating Radio Beacon, or EPIRB sent a signal that the Coast
Guard received, enabling it to locate the vessel. Additionally, the
vessel’s liferaft self deployed and inflated. The vessel capsized
and sank too quickly for crew members to reach their immersion
suits. Tragically, the captain lost his life in the sinking. Further
efforts were suspended after the Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast,
Air Station San Francisco and Coast Guard Station Monterey
searched throughout the night and again at first light the next day.

New York Harbor - Thanks to the heroic actions of the pilot and
aircrew US Airways Flight 1549, all 155 passengers survived a
controlled ditching in the Hudson River on January 15, 2009. The
twin engine jetliner lost power after striking a flock of Canadian
geese shortly after taking off from LaGuardia Airport in New York
City. The Airbus 320 was enroute from New York City to
Charlotte, North Carolina when the aviation casualty occurred.
We salute local ferry operators for their alert response, which
together with other vessels, helped save the day.

Washington State Ferries - The ferry Rhododendron is expected to
return to service following mechanical repairs. A boiler leak was
discovered during an inspection of the 227 foot ferry last month,
requiring dismantling and reassembly of the vessel’s heating
boiler. The 937 ton ferry has a capacity of 546 passengers and 48
cars, making her return to service welcome. (WSF)
The Washington State Ferry Rhododendron was built in 1947 and
subsequently rebuilt in 1990. Twin diesels totalling 2,172 horsepower
give the vessel an operation speed of 11 knots. (WSF)
