Dinner Cruise Boats
Employment aboard ferries and water taxis can be appealing for a
number of reasons. However, you may not be the only person who
happened to discover that. Many ferry operators tend to be small
businesses. Not to say that there aren’t large operations such as
the Washington State Ferry system. Or look at New York City, where
ferry operations are managed by the New York City Department of
Transportation. But by and large, ferry and water taxi operations tend
to be small.

But there are many opportunities outside of ferry boats for people
who have experience on the water, and for people who don’t. The
dinner cruise and tour boat operations industry offers job
candidates many of the same positions that arise on ferries, such
as captains, mates, engineers, deckhands, maintenance workers,
administrative personnel, food service workers, waiters and
waitresses, chefs, concession operators and other positions.

Some of these dinner cruise and tour boats operate year round,
depending how far north they are. On enclosed vessels, some tend
to operate year round through the winter anyway. However, as with
certain ferry operations, some of the dinner cruise and tour boat
jobs are seasonal positions.

We’ve highlighted a couple of those employers here, limiting
ourselves to those vessel operators whose websites have a page
for employment opportunities. These include
Wendella, a tour
operator in Chicago. Wendella is a third generation family business
with experienced and knowledgeable docents and tour guides who
provide educational narration about the history of Chicago and its
architecture. Wendella’s vessels are certified annually by the U.S.
Coast Guard and its captains are USCG licensed officers. Wendella’
s website lists opportunities for captains, vessel crewmembers,
tour guide-greeters, office personnel -customer service, office
personnel - ticket sales and bartenders. Captains have ultimate
responsibility for the safety and security of the vessel, passengers
and crew. Due to U.S. Coast Guard regulations, captains need to be
U.S. citizens. Wendella also seeks candidates for crewmember
positions. Crewmembers are responsible for carrying out those
tasks which support the captain and allow for the vessel to operate
as a tour boat. Crewmember are responsible for securing vessels,
maintaining vessel cleanliness, carrying out assigned tasks, and
assisting in providing for the comforts and safety of passengers.
Crewmembers are expected to present a professional and positive
image for the company. Visit the Wendella website to read further
about the job requirements for other positions that include
guides/greeters, ticket sales and customer service people and
bartenders.

Moving a little further south, there is
Yacht StarShip, which runs
dinner cruises on Tampa Bay, Florida. Yacht Starship offers
positions for captains, deckhand/mates, engine room attendants,
cooks, bartenders, servers and server assistants. Yacht Starship
operates the Yacht Starship, an $8 million yacht with five private
dining rooms and Lady Tampa Bay, a 149 passenger $2 million
yacht.
